However, today we’ll be focusing on gym equipment that takes up very little space and gives you everything you need to build an incredible body right at home.

Exercises that you will be able to perform will target the following muscle groups:

  • Legs: Quads, hamstrings glutes
  • Back: Traps, lats
  • Chest
  • Shoulders: Delts
  • Arms: Triceps and Biceps, Forearms
  • Core muscles
  • … and everything in between

As you can see, when owning one of these all-in-one home gyms there really is no shortage of exercises you can do and we’ll explain to you exactly what the best options are going to be for you this year!

Part I: Best Home Gyms Under $500

We always start off our articles with a depiction of our Top Pick so you can get a good idea of where we personally stand with our recommendations.

The Top Pick has won our editor’s heart over with its immense value for the money and we genuinely think that it’s the best option for this price range.

Weider Power Tower Stand-Alone Gym

However, depending on your own personal preference, you may feel slightly different.

All in all, in the sub-500 dollar price range you’re going to get some fantastic entry-level devices that will serve your purposes for quite a while if you are a beginner weight lifter.

The thing is, is that as you develop more experience and you eventually get much stronger, this price-range might not suit your needs anymore since there won’t be enough weight but if you’re just starting out, you’ll get about 1-2 years out of these machines.

The key point here is that if you’re a beginner, snap yourself up something cheap (under 500 bucks) and you’re off to the races.

You can always upgrade your equipment at a later date if you wish to do so with heavier weights and we’ll cover all of that down below.

Let’s get started!

#1: Gold’s Gym XRS 50 Home Gym System

Golds-Gym-XRS-50

Editor’s Score:

Chiming in with a 300lbs user weight capacity and a 112lb Vinyl Weight Stack, the Gold’s Gym XRS 50 will deliver one of the most unbeatable home gym experiences in this price range.

Included is a package containing an exercise chart developed by a certified personal trainer in case you’re not familiar with all of the options you have on this machine.

Exercises you can perform include (but are not limited to):

  • Chest Press/Chest Flys
  • 4-Roll Leg Developer
  • High Pulley for lat pulldowns
  • Low Pulley to tone your legs and glute muscles

The Good:

  • Options to work out your entire body including lower and upper
  • Excellent adjustability to suit different body types and sizes
  • Gold’s has been around since the 60s and has had decades to perfect its product
  • The personal trainer-designed workout options are essential in our opinion

The Bad:

  • We like to incorporate actual pull ups and chin ups for maximal compound movement results so you may need to buy additional pull up bars if that’s what you want to do as well
  • Training legs without squatting with free weights is sub-optimal and a separate power rack will be required with barbells and weights to accomplish this
  • Bicep curls cannot be isolated – you can use a supinated lat pulldown to target your biceps, but just know that you will also target your lats this way

Key Features:

  • Work out your legs, back, shoulders, chest, triceps and biceps with this machine
  • Get the right movements down with the included guide
  • Enjoy a 90-Day limited warranty in case something goes wrong

#2: Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym

Bowflex-PR1000-Home-Gym

Editor’s Score:

BOWFLEX’S FAMOUS SPACE-SAVING DESIGN

If you’ve ever watched TV, chances are pretty high that you’ve heard of Bowflex and their PR1000 Home Gym System is probably one of their most essential offerings.

Their famous resistance-band type of design removes the need for any mechanical pulleys and weights not only reducing the unit’s total weight.

Keep in mind that the resistance can’t be upgraded on this unit, unlike some other Bowflex units which is somewhat unfortunate, but not unexpected for a device in this price range.

(For a unit that CAN be upgraded, please see our Bowflex Blaze in PART II of this article).

Enjoy the ability to fold this thing up when it’s not in use and enjoy 210lbs of total power rod resistance so you can keep getting stronger for longer.

The user weight capacity is capped at 300lbs so virtually anyone can use this machine providing they’re not over 300lbs.

Some Exercises You Can Perform on This Machine:

  • Leg extensions, curls and kickbacks
  • Shoulder pressing, side delt raises and shrugs
  • AB crunch, oblique crunch and oblique twists
  • Bicep curls, tricep pushdowns
  • Flat chest press, incline and decline chest press
  • Lat pulldowns, rows and lower back extensions
  • … over 30 exercises to choose from

The Good:

  • This Bowflex machine can be folded up and can perform over 30 exercises for a versatile workout
  • Its space occupation is very small so it can be useful in smaller places
  • 300lbs user weight capacity to accommodate a variety of lifters

The Bad:

  • Some people might prefer to stick to tradition weight stacks
  • No squatting
  • Takes 2 people to assemble (slightly time-consuming just by yourself)
  • The resistance cannot be upgraded unlike some other Bowflex models

Key Features:

  • 210lbs of resistance
  • Over 30 exercises can be performed for versatility
  • Warranty: 1-Year Frame, 5-Year Power Rods

#3: Weider 2980 X Weight System

It’s definitely not one of the most advanced and feature-dense items on our list, but for the amount you pay you’re getting a pretty sweet deal in our opinion – and a good enough device to get your feet wet in the world of weightlifting.

The included exercise chart will ensure you can continue to find exercises to do without having to guess which exercises you can or cannot perform on this machine.

Definitely don’t take our word for it – click on “Check Pricing” below to be brought to the Amazon page so you can learn more about what others are saying about this product.

Exercises You Can Perform:

  • Leg extensions, leg curls
  • Lat pulldowns for your back and arms
  • Chest flys for your chest muscles
  • Preacher curls for biceps

The Good:

  • 210lbs of resistance can keep you going for quite a while
  • The variety of exercises is surprising for a unit this cheap
  • An included exercise guide will help you figure out how to use the machine if you’re not sure of any aspect of it

The Bad:

  • The limited resistance of 210lbs may prove to be less useful the more advanced you become
  • Can’t perform squats or leg press on this machine
  • No area appears to allow for tricep pushdowns

Key Features:

  • Over exercises to choose from to suit various needs
  • Included exercise guide will make it easy to figure out what to do
  • Enough resistance to get you started
  • Total upper body and lower body workout possibilities

#4: Weider Power Tower

Weider-Power-Tower

Editor’s Score:

EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR YOUR MONEY

When you’re working out at home you don’t really need much equipment or space to be honest and that’s where the Weider Power Tower truly shines.

Offering the ability to do a variety of exercises across all the major muscle groups, bodyweight training is known to be one of the most effective styles of training for multiple reasons.

Learn more below!

The Power Tower offers up the ability to do the following exercises:

  • Pull ups
  • Push ups
  • Knee-raises either hanging or on the dip station parallel bars
  • Dips
  • Calf Raises

The above exercises are the most critical exercises to do because they are what’s known as compound movements.

When you work out, especially as a beginner, it’s absolutely imperative to do compound movements because of the enhanced results you get.

Doing a movement that utilises multiple joints at once are known as compound movements, and you can learn more about that by clicking here.

Don’t waste your time when you work out, use your time wisely and don’t spend too much money doing it.

This home-gym setup will get you a very long way into your bodybuilding adventures, and you can even snap yourself up some weights and a dip-belt when you feel like you need to add more weight to your pull ups and dips!

Key Features:

  • Do pull ups, push ups and dips
  • Full core-strengthening area as well for leg raises, knee raises and l-sit holds
  • Enhance your calf muscles by doing calf raises on the included platform
  • Full ability to be adjusted to suit your own body’s style and size
  • Warranty: 90-Day Limited Warranty

As you can see, there are some very compelling options under 500 bucks and we really don’t think you have to spend much more than that.

Of course, adding a good set of weights and some excellent barbells would be a necessity for certain options, but not all options require this.

As long as you’re aware that if you are more advanced you might need something a little bit more hefty, you will not be disappointed.

Expecting gym-quality gear under 500 bucks in our minds is silly, just keep in mind that your expectations should reflect the amount of money you spend.

Expecting a Lamborghini for the price of a Toyota Tercel won’t be doing you any favours, so keep your expectations in check here.

Part II: Best Home Gyms From $500 – $1000

Alright, so we’ll be discussing Part II with you which are the best options between $500 and $1000.

We really believe this is where the sweet-spot lies for your average weightlifter because anything more than that will be somewhat unnecessary.

However, as always, we just present you with the information and it’s completely up to you what you do with it.

Maybe you will choose something that better fits your own personal needs – but it’s at least our job to show you what the options are.

Let’s jump right in to Part II!

#1: Bowflex PR3000 Home Gym

Bowflex-PR3000-Home-Gym

Editor’s Score:

BEST HOME-GYM WARRANTY OF ALL TIME

Let’s be honest here, we know that Bowflex is really good at marketing their products.

WE also know that sometimes the user experience doesn’t match up to the marketing hype, but that’s simply not the case with the Bowflex PR3000 Home Gym.

We love the unique angle Bowflex comes from, and the immense space-saving you get with this machine is truly something to be spoken about!

Delivering one of the most remarkable experiences, the 50+ exercises you’ll be able to perform on this machine will have you scratching your head thinking about what to do next.

We don’t always love having millions of options, but you might be someone who appreciates at least having them.

And… unlike other Bowflex machines, the weight resistance CAN be upgraded for later if you require more (you beast, you…)

We were going to award this machine with our full 5-star rating, but the fact that it doesn’t include the leg press station is the reason we knocked it down to 4 out of 5.

Make no mistake, however – this is still one heck of a deal for the right buyer.

  • No leg press station
  • The package is EXTREMELY heavy and might not be able to get delivered by standard shipping couriers

#2: Marcy Diamond Elite Smith System

Marcy-Diamond-Elite-Smith-System

Editor’s Score:

HIGHLY-REVIEWED PRODUCT

At Physique Authority, generally speaking, we prefer freeweights over smith machines and isolation machines, but we still felt the need to present you with the awesome Marcy Diamond Elite Smith System because it is simply capable of a ton for you to enjoy.

Do squats, bench press, shoulder press, and everything in between all while not breaking the bank and taking up your entire apartment or house.

Although freeweights are the preferred training method for a variety of reasons including avoiding injury and training stabilisation muscles, some people might prefer the user-friendliness of the smith machine.

We’d never recommend you to do bench pressing, squats or shoulder presses in this machine because the movement is unnatural for the human body, but using this machine for anything else is amazingly suitable.

You can still choose to do the above exercises, and as long as you understand the risks involved you’ll be fine.

There are over 100 exercise variations you can do in this machine with some of the most popular being the following:

  • Leg extensions and curls
  • Pressing movements such as bench and shoulder
  • Smith lateral raises
  • Lunges
  • Cable crossover pulleys for chest exercises and other functional movements

Includes:

  • 1x Lat Bar
  • 1x Triceps Rope
  • Shiver Bar
  • Ankle Strap
  • Chrome Row Handle
  • 2x Single Handles

The Good:

  • Tons of exercise variations including a smith machine, cable cross overs and leg exercise capabilities
  • Over 100 exercises can be performed
  • Lots of attachment options for various training methods
  • Includes foot plate for seated rows
  • Storage for weight plates

The Bad:

  • Smith machines aren’t meant to do chest pressing, shoulder pressing or squatting because of the unnatural body positioning
  • You might still prefer to do those, but just be warned
  • Weights will have to be acquired separately
  • Only a 2-year limited warranty on parts only

Key Features:

  • Lots of exercise variability for maximising your results and enjoyment
  • Good options for attachments to do different exercises
  • Warranty: 2-Year Limited on Parts Only

The people have spoken: this machine enjoys a full 5-star rating across many major online retailer websites and that really says something if you ask us!

Finally you also can enjoy a machine that can offer you the ability to perform the leg press with an optional attachment and the maximum weight for that and the bench press is 400lbs.

Although the weight stack maxes out at 200lbs, the 2:1 pulley ratio can double the weight to 400lbs on your bench press and leg press to keep you progressing for longer.

Exercises You Can Do:

  • Bench pressing exercises
  • Chest flys
  • Reverse delt flys
  • Leg kickouts for those glutes!
  • Lat pulldowns
  • Tricep extensions
  • Leg extensions and curls
  • Bicep curls
  • Laterla raises

The Good:

  • BodyCraft loves to boast about their lifetime warranty – forever!
  • Stunning design that doesn’t take up excessive space
  • Fully adjustable seat and back rest
  • Cables provide a biomechanically correct way to work out by contouring the movements to your body’s shape
  • Tons of different exercise variations to keep you advancing and progressing for a long time
  • The 200lbs weight stack has a special feature that can double its weight to 400lbs for added resistance
  • Optional leg press attachment (yes! finally!)
  • 2:1 weight ratio on bench press and leg press (optional) can double its resistance from 200 to 400lbs

The Bad:

  • At least the option exists for you to get a leg press attachment unlike other options…
  • Extremely heavy package of about 600lbs so Arnold himself will have to be hired to help you set this thing up

Key Features:

  • 2:1 pulley system doubles the resistance on bench press and leg press
  • Optional leg press attachment finally offers that ability for you unlike other machines
  • Offers a pretty small footprint for what you are able to accomplish
  • Tons of exercise variations that will hit all of your body’s muscle groups
  • Warranty: BodyCraft’s Famous LIFETIME Warranty – Yup – FOREVER!

As you can see there are tons of different options for home gyms and you kind of just have to decide for yourself what you need and what you’re planning to do.

Although we’ve mixed in a fair amount of Bowflex products we understand that these can be considered somewhat “gimmicky” and not “true to life” so for that reason we generally advise to steer clear from these units if you’re looking for the most authentic experience.

If you want to just work out at home and get jacked, Bowflex does the job very well so don’t get us wrong – they are by no means bad machines.

Bowflex has become famous for a reason and if they were lying about any aspect of their marketing material, somebody would have found out by now and they wouldn’t enjoy such high reviews.

Anyway, with all that said and done, we thank you for viewing our article this year and hope to see you again soon!

  1. Wow, what a thorough and informative read! I appreciate you breaking down the different pieces of equipment according to price. Very helpful! My brother actually owns the Weider 2980 X Weight System and I’ve found it awesome for full body workouts. Plus, it’s not overly bulky so it fits in my parent’s garage pretty well…anyway, awesome review! Thanks for sharing

    1. Hey Sarah,

  2. This is a great list, you have so many great gyms to choose from. My favorite is #2, the body-solid G15. It seems like it would provide enough exercises for me and not take up too much space as long as my ceiling is tall enough hehe, plus I love that brand. I love that you get a workout DVD too, that is really neat and probably motivating. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hey Melissa,

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, Body-Solid makes some seriously impressive machinery for working out. Glad you enjoyed the article!

Hope to see you again soon.

  3. I love how you only need the most minimal amount of equipment to set up a home gym.

All I have is a bench press but the weights and knowledge that I have at my disposal allow me to create some really hardworking workouts from the comfort of my property. Helping me to save money in the long run and spend on other things worthwhile.

    Thanks for the great post:)
