The Best Sports Watches for 2018: Level-Up Your Fitness Game!

Posted by

Hi everyone, and welcome to our Best Sports Watches for 2018 Buyer’s Guide! We’re very excited to have you here since technology is one of our favourite aspects aside from fitness, and we absolutely love to combine both of these realms.

Please note that we’ve done away with the Editor’s Scores in this article because every person will want a certain feature and we don’t think it’s fair to arbitrarily rate these watches.

Each watch will have certain features that you may or may not be looking for so ratings definitely won’t make much of a difference.

We’d definitely urge you to click on the Check Pricing links to be brought to the Amazon page so you can get a better idea of what other people are saying about each product!

Use the quick-navigation buttons below to check out the best-selling brands:

With technology really exploding over the last 5-10 years, it’s no surprise that so many people get very excited when there is some new form of technology available for their consumption.

Sports watches aren’t exactly a “brand-new” thing which is great – this means that the market has had some time to mature.

That’s always a good thing since so many options become available when that happens.

Think about when technology first gets released – whoever made the technological advancement is usually on top and can charge any kind of money that they want while delivering the features they think are good.

This leaves the consumer at the crap-end of the stick which isn’t good for anyone. Luckily this has changed and there are a few key players on the sports-watch market these days including Fitbit, Garmin, Polar and a few other ones worth mentioning.

We’re going to kick off this year’s article with the 3 best Fitbit watches but make sure to keep reading the whole article for watches from the likes of Garmin, Huawei, Polar and Suunto.

Suunto makes some of our personal favourite watches, and the same can also be said for Garmin as well so continue the article down below!

Just because Fitbit is the most popular sports watch aside from Apple’s Apple Watch doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re ideal for everyone.

If you’re sick and tired of hearing about Apple and all of their products etc., you’ll find a refreshing list of non Apple-based sports watches here (some, if not most of which can also work on iOS).

In the future we might consider creating a guide on Apple watches, but that’s a little bit outside of the realm of what Physique Authority is all about.

We’re not really interested in “smart watches” per-se, we’re more interested in the watches that have the ability to help you with your activity and fitness goals, hence the “sports watch” association and title.

With most of the functionality being relatively similar across the board, most of the differences will be found in materials used, craftsmanship, build quality and perhaps a few features that either are or are not included in each watch.

Fitbit will get you started and if you want to skip to any other manufacturer, you’re more than welcome to do so!

We’ve hand-selected a handful of watches from five major players in the sports watch game today and we’ll definitely be upgrading and updating this list as time goes on so make sure to check back at least every year!

The Fitbit Charge 2 is one of the all-time best selling fitness watches  – and you get to choose from six different colours to suit any need or want. Click to learn more below! Not only that, the Charge 2 is also Fitbit’s best-selling sports watch for a good reason.

Fitbit really comes through with some outstanding features. We love the fact that the watch has built in GPS which will show you the route you ran or biked post-workout, it can call, text and view calendar alerts, and it’s even got the ability to begin tracking your session automatically in case you forgot to log your workout!

You can also customise your watch with the likes of leather wristbands for more classy appeal, different coloured rubberised ones, and even special-edition trackers.

We love this watch and you’re definitely going to as well.

Standout Features:

  • Connect wirelessly to your favourite Android, Windows or iOS device with the Fitbit app for more detailed information
  • PurePulse Heart Rate monitoring
  • The clock faces are fully customisable depending on how you like to view your information
  • Multi-Sport tracking with GPS capabilities (weight lifting, running, yoga and more)
  • Call, text and calendar alerts from your Android, Windows Phone or iOS device

  • The best thing is that the Charge 2 can automatically detect when you’re performing an activity in case you forget to initialise the watch before you begin!

The three different colour options on the Fitbit Ionic will not leave you longing for anything else – at least in our opinions – and Fitbit is one of the best-selling sports watches to boot!

Kick the drop-down menu below to find out why we think you’ll love their brand new Ionic lineup!

A bit of a step-up from Fitbit’s Charge 2, the Ionic is fully capable of storing music, playing Pandora Stations and even making payments just like Apple Pay or Android Pay – and that’s pretty sweet.

You also get the standard GPS, heart rate monitoring and sleep stages monitoring as well as Bluetooth connectivity to use your favourite wireless headphones which is even more of a deal-sweetener in our books.

Key Features:

  • You get personal coaching to keep you on track of your fitness goals
  • Built-in GPS allows you to track and check your routes that you have completed

  • The multi-day battery allows you to worry less about charging and focus more on your fitness goals

With the Fitbit Blaze, not only do you get five amazing colours to choose from, but you also get a variety of features making this the middle-of-the-road option for Fitbit enthusiasts. We love some of the features on this watch and really think you might like to learn more before you buy.

Sharing characteristics with the other two Fitbit sports watches featured above, this watch brings similar features to the table at a middle-of-the-road price point.

You can seamlessly connect your watch to your phone’s GPS, monitor your fitness levels, get notifications to move around, monitor your sleep patters and even get on-screen workouts, notifications and music control – all from the comfort of your wrist.

  • PurePulse Heart Rate monitoring
  • Connect the watch to your phone’s GPS to map out your routes and view them right on your watch’s display
  • Get all of your smartphone notifications (calls, SMS and calendar)
  • Ability to track a variety of sports including running, swimming, weight lifting and even yoga

  • Cardio Fitness Level & Guided Breathing Sessions are brand new and allow you to keep track of how you’re keeping in shape and how your breathing is doing by monitoring your heart rate
  • The Blaze allows you to control your music through the watch (skip, pause, etc)

  • Easily swap out bands (as mentioned above) to match any occasion!

As you’ve seen, Fitbit offers up some pretty compelling arguments to take a closer look at their watch. For a very reasonable price you can dive into the sports watch lifestyle while not breaking the bank.

Garmin is another one of the best sports watch makers around and they really have probably the most compelling options on the market today.

Their sheer number of awesome watches makes them a fantastic manufacturer to look further into because they pretty much have options to suit anyone’s needs and desires.

Definitely have a look at the Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire below – this thing’s glass is made from laboratory-created sapphire and is the hardest substance that looks like glass known to man aside from diamonds!

If you haven’t already, head over to Jerry Rig Everything on YouTube and do a quick search of his tests on Sapphire Glass and you will see that this glass doesn’t scratch until level 8 on the Mohs hardness scale.

For your reference, Corning’s Gorilla Glass generally withstands Mohs scratches up to a level 6 with deeper grooves occurring at level 7 – and Sapphire makes it all the way to level 8 which is an exceptionally hard material and is essentially scratch-proof.

Although not the most price-conscious choice this year, the Fenix 5X Sapphire is at least worth having a look at if not to just admire the sheer beauty, engineering, heart and soul that Garmin poured into that device.

Let’s crack Garmin right open and have a look to see what’s going on here!

Garmin Forerunner 620

The Garmin Forerunner 620 is just one of six awesome Garmin watches we’re featuring this year and is feature-rich more than you think right out of the gate.

Shipping with the choice of two awesome colours as seen above, we think that this watch is an awesome entry-point into the sports watch lifestyle with features suitable for anyone.

Although a pretty basic watch when compared to the likes of some of the Fitbit options above, this is by far one of the most renowned running watches on the market.

It’s got the ability to track the way you run so you can improve your form and efficiency over time, and it can monitor your VO2 maximum to let you know how your fitness and cardio levels are doing.

It’s all about improvement over time – and this watch has you covered in every regard.

Garmin Forerunner 920XT

Featuring similar features as the Garmin 620 above, the Garmin 920XT brings a few new features and design qualities to the table that we think you’ll enjoy.

The 620 above definitely isn’t one of the fanciest or prettiest running watches on the block, but the 920XT solves some of the aesthetic issues we have with the 620 even ever so slightly.

However, we still think you’ll love it for what it can offer.

Chiming in with some advanced features over the 620, this 920XT will allow you to take your fitness tracking to the pool as well as offer you drill logging, stroke count, stroke rate and swolf score to track your finest pool efforts.

It goes without saying that, due to the 920XT’s ability to accompany you to your favourite pool that the watch is 100% water proof.

Key Features:

  • Full running dynamics analyse your form and you can improve over time through cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time (when used with HRM-Run or HRM-Tri Monitors)
  • VO2 max estimates can get you set up with how well your body uses oxygen which also aids in helping you improve over time

  • Effortlessly save, plan and execute your efforts in a community fashion with Garmin Connect
  • Garmin Connect is available through Bluetooth, WiFi or USB if you’re near your PC
  • Fully compatible with Android and iOS devices
  • The watch face is fully customisable with your favourite photos so you can have a fully personalised watch experience!

Garmin Forerunner 735XT

As one of the most beautiful sports watches on our list, the Garmin 735XT offers up an impressive feature list and a gorgeous design philosophy to boot!

Chiming in with two colour options, we definitely love the teal and the grey as well. It’s a stunning piece of technology and it is guaranteed to help you achieve your highest level of fitness!

You’ll be getting one of the most beautiful and user-friendly sports watch experiences on the block with Garmin’s 935XT and for a good reason! The extensive list of features will not leave you with anything to desire.

Easily connect to Garmin Connect to share your stats, track any activity including swimming, cycling, triathlons, hiking and even weight lifting and quickly switch between these activities with the tap of a simple button.

  • Fully compatible with Garmin’s cycling awareness devices such as their rearview radar, smart bike lights and Varia Vision in-sight display for your convenience.

Garmin Forerunner 235

The Garmin Forerunner 235 has two major things going for it: Its price-point and its beauty. Although the 620 above is roughly in the same price-league as the 235, we truly believe that you’re getting a much nicer looking watch here.

Chiming in with three colour options, your new 235 will be tailor-made to suit your own personal design preferences which is a great thing in our books. Options are always a good thing for the consumer.

Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire

The Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire Edition features the world’s hardest and scratch-proof laboratory-made material: Sapphire and comes only in one single colour.

Please note that although the watch only ships in one colour, you have customisation options in terms of the bands and watch faces so you can tailor it to any special event of your choice!

We’ve included one more model from Garmin’s Fenix 5 collection below: The Garmin Fenix 5 without the sapphire glass which comes in two different colour options. Click Continue Reading for more information below.

Garmin’s Fenix 5X Sapphire itself comes in only one colour, however, as mentioned, the Fenix 5 Collection offers various configurations for the ultimate customisation experience. We’d urge you to check out those options at the link under Check Pricing.

The rugged and durable feel of the watches make these ideal for those using their watch in rugged conditions or on extended sporting expeditions requiring unparalleled durability.

The Sapphire watch face will ensure that this watch remains scratch-free thanks to its scratch-proof design. For a more classic and premium feeling experience without completely obliterating the bank, Polar really comes forth as a great maker of premium sports watches.

The elegant, rectangular design somehow manages to bring an element of curviness to their designs which we think looks absolutely stunning – sort of akin to Fitbit offerings as seen above.

What we really enjoy here is the ability to virtually hot-swap out your favourite coloured wrist bands for an easy way to enjoy a completely different colour and feel for any gender or occasion!

  1. Heya, that’s a great choice. I don’t know where to start.
I like the look of Suunto the most. Can you recommend these? Or what is in your opinion the best choice?
    Great selection thank’s 🙂

    1. Hello Stefan,

I also love the Suunto watches however my personal favourite has to the the Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire. It’s an incredible watch for any occasion and looks really nice too.

      Hope you enjoyed the article!

    2. Hi Stefan,

In my opinion, the “best” choice is by far the Fenix 5X Sapphire by Garmin. All of the watches we’ve listed are excellent choices, however, it comes down to personal preference and, most importantly, budget. The absolute #1 best watch on our list, as I’ve mentioned, is definitely the Fenix 5X Sapphire.

      Hope that helps!

  2. Do you know if there’s any way I can get these shipped to Germany if I ordered a couple?

I have nephews over there that are dying to get their hands on one. Since they saw mine the last time I was visiting.

    1. Hi James,

You can go to and see if it’s available there. Otherwise I am not too sure if they offer international shipping on It’s generally dependent on the product in question.
