best weight benches for 2018

The Best Weight Benches for 2018: Awesome Home-Gym Gear PART I

Posted by

Hi everyone, and welcome to our Best Weight Benches for 2018 Buyer’s Guide!

When it comes to choosing a workout bench, there are a few different things to consider:

  • Do you want your bench to be able to go flat, decline and incline, or do you want just a flat bench alone?
  • Do you care what brand it is?
  • What would be your budget for a bench?
  • Do you wish to add to your home gym later?
  • How much weight can you lift, and how much do you weigh? This could affect the bench’s weight capacity.

The above things are some of the questions to ask yourself. There are a few more things, and we’ll go through them below.

Some common weight bench features:

Most of the benches below will be able to at least go flat and go on an incline in case you want to do some incline exercises, and many of them will also be able to do flat, incline and decline (FID).

In the photo below, you can see some of the variations (other than flat) that a bench can be capable of if you aren’t familiar with that.

If you’re already familiar with how benches operate, you can skip over this section and move down to the list. We don’t want to waste any of your time here!

FID-bench

Here are some common exercises you can do:

Incline:

  • Shoulder Press
  • Bench Press
  • Incline Dumbbell Bicep Curls

Flat:

  • EZ-Bar Skull Crushers
  • French Dumbbell Press (Overhead Tricep Extensions)
  • Bench Press
  • Bent Over Rows

Decline:

  • Dumbbell or Barbell Bench Press
  • Chest Flys
  • Sit Ups/Crunches

(CONTINUED BELOW)

As you can see, there are a multitude of setups that will lend themselves nicely to different exercises.

If you’re someone who just wants to do some basic flat and incline bench pressing and some shoulder pressing, perhaps a flat bench with the ability to incline will suffice for you.

If you need decline capabilities, however, perhaps you might consider looking into getting an FID bench (Flat, Incline, Decline).

Why don’t we get our list started so you can take a look at the different features available to you!

#1: CAP Barbell Deluxe Utility Weight Bench

CAP-Barbell-Deluxe-Utility-Weight-Bench

Editor’s Score:

BEST BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION

The CAP Barbell Deluxe Utility Weight Bench is perfect for those who want to have a functional and reliable bench to workout with at home.

Though not recommended for serious gyms, this bench can work quite well for your garage, basement or other home-gym setups.

As one of our most budget-friendly options for this year, you’re going to be getting a pretty decent bench for the money.

The bench measures in at 53L x 27W x 45H in the upright position and has a weight capacity limit of 500lbs in the flat position.

We’ll go over all the fine details in the key features section below so you can get a good idea of what to expect.

What we love:

  • It’s cheap!
  • Tons of different incline/flat positions available
  • The front seat can even be adjusted
  • Built-in power bands
  • Can be used with the CAP FM-CB8008 Ultimate Power Cage (purchased separately)

What we don’t like:

  • Cheap looking
  • Probably not the best or highest quality bench out there
  • No decline position available
  • No memory foam padding like some other CAP models

Key Features:

  • Flat/Incline Only
  • All-steel construction for a pretty sturdy experience overall
  • Weight Capacities: 500lbs flat or 400lbs in the incline position
  • Total Positions Available: 7 for the backrest and 3 for the front seat
  • Bench Weight: 50lbs
  • Special Features: 2x Power Band Posts

Overall Verdict:

This bench is pretty cheap and if you need something with a few flat and incline positions, this could be for you. You don’t have to spend much money here to get something halfway decent.

#2: Bowflex SelectTech 5.1 Adjustable Bench

Bowflex-SelectTech-5.1-Adjustable-Bench

Editor’s Score:

BEST FRAME WARRANTY

Whenever we think about exercise equipment, Bowflex inevitably comes up in our minds not because we think they’re the best out there, but because we’re all used to seeing their ads on TV in our childhoods!

However, just because they don’t make the best equipment out there doesn’t mean that they don’t deliver some quality items from time to time.

Bowflex’s SelectTech 5.1 Adjustable Bench likely offers one of the most impressive frame warranties we’ve ever seen on a workout bench and we’ll go over that in more detail below.

In addition to the insane frame warranty, you’re also not really shelling out that much hard earned cash for this product – not much more than our CAP model up above.

For a bit more than the CAP above, you’re also going to be getting the ability to decline the bench as well which could be great for certain users.

What we love:

  • Having a declining bench for this price is pretty awesome
  • 30-Year frame warranty is incredible
  • Six different incline/decline positions

What we don’t like:

  • Upholstery only comes with a 1-year warranty which means you can’t use this bench at a gym, only at home

Key Features:

  • Flat, Incline and Decline capabilities for a versatile training experience
  • Dimensions: 56L x 26W x 20H
  • Made from heavy-duty commercial grade steel
  • Removable leg hold-down brace adds decline position support for those exercises
  • The built-in wheels will allow you to quickly and effortlessly store it away if you need to move it out of the way

Overall Verdict:

Unlike the CAP bench above, this bench provides decline abilities.

If you need that, then the extra few bucks you’ll spend on this bench will get you a much better warranty and more training options so we would recommend it.

#3: Rep Adjustable Bench AB-3000 FID

Rep-Adjustable-FID-Bench-AB-3000

Editor’s Score:

As one of the highest-reviewed weight benches on the Rep Fitness website and other major online retailer websites, the Rep Fitness AB-3000 FID Adjustable Bench is definitely one of our favourite models this year.

With the most versatility in terms of different position options so far on this list we’d have no problems recommending this bench for anyone that needs to be able to have all three positions – flat, incline and decline.

Seats are made out of 2.5″ padding with an extremely durable vinyl wrap and the ladder is made out of solid steel so you can adjust this bench with peace of mind.

Not only that, but the steel ladder is made from bare steel which means that repeated adjustments will not chip any paint on the steel which is pretty sweet in our minds if you’re someone who cares as much as we do about the looks of our equipment.

What we love:

  • Has all three positions available: Flat, Incline and Decline
  • Ladder is solid steel and is unpainted which will not chip
  • Very durable vinyl seat wrap for maximal durability
  • Massive 1000lbs weight capacity!
  • With over 100 reviews on the Rep Fitness website, it still features a 5/5 star rating from users

What we don’t like:

  • Even though this bench gets a 5/5 on the official Rep Fitness website, we docked half a star off thanks to that less-than-stellar 10-year frame warranty
  • Requires assembly, which most benches do anyway so it’s not a big deal to us
  • Slightly heavy at 85lbs

Key Features:

  • Weight Capacity: 1000lbs
  • Bench Weight: 85lbs
  • Warranty: 10-Years on the Frame
  • Can adjust to flat, incline or decline (-20 degrees to 85 degrees)
  • Unpainted solid steel ladder which will not have the paint chip after repeated adjustments

Overall Verdict:

Although we really want to love this bench, we’re not certain it’s the best decision.

The Bowflex above offers pretty much the same functionality plus an additional 20 years of frame warranty, but we do think that this bench is built slightly better.

We also like the looks of the Rep Fitness bench here much better so ultimately it will come down to how you feel about these benches!

#4: Precor Six Position Adjustable Home Bench

Precor-Six-Position-Adjustable-Home-Bench

Editor’s Score:

BEST GENERAL-PURPOSE WEIGHT BENCH

One can’t really think of gym exercise gear without thinking about Precor as they’ve pretty much been a staple in any gym for a long time.

The Precor Six Position Adjustable Home Bench is a bench we really like a ton thanks to its great build quality and padding, and we think you just might like it as much as we do.

Offering up an industry-leading lifetime frame warranty, a powder-coated steel finish and a 6-position flat or incline adjustment capability, this might just be your next most amazing home bench.

However, there are a couple of critical points we don’t like too much and we want you to be as aware as possible of all aspects of this bench!

What we love:

  • Overwhelming number of extremely satisfied customers with lots of very high reviews
  • People are saying that this bench has very awesome build quality
  • 6 different back positions
  • Bottom transport wheels make it easy to move around if you need to
  • Powder-coated frame is beautiful
  • Can either do flat or incline
  • The frame features a lifetime warranty which is impressive

What we don’t like:

  • The price – seems a little bit high for what you’re getting but if you can overlook that, the quality really makes up for it
  • Very low 300-lbs weight capacity is pretty sub-par in our opinion

Key Features:

  • Powder-coated steel frame is strong and high quality
  • Measures in at 52L x 24W x 16H
  • Weighs about 55lbs
  • Lifetime Frame Warranty
  • Powder-coated steel frame for a very beautiful design

Overall Verdict:

The bench is made from very high quality materials and offers up an impressive lifetime frame warranty, but you have to decide if that’s worth the price since you don’t get the ability to decline the bench.

Further to that, if you’re comfortable with having a 300lbs weight limit on the bench you can use it for some dumbbell exercises, but don’t plan on training to become Mr. Olympia anytime soon!

Due to the build quality, Precor’s reputation and customer service, we can confidently recommend this bench but just keep the shortcomings in mind if you decide to go this route.

#5: Marcy MD-857 Olympic Weight Bench

Marcy-MD-857-Olympic-Weight-Bench

Editor’s Score:

BEST BENCH WITH BUILT-IN RACK

This bench is pretty special to us. The Marcy MD-857 Olympic Weight Bench comes packed with features that no other bench on this list will offer, and we think you might love this bench as well.

Not only are you getting a pretty decent bench, you’re also getting a full bench press rack to boot making it a solid all-in-one option for those of you who like to work out your chest, legs, biceps and more.

The remarkable thing about this bench here is that you are getting tons of features for a price that is pretty much less than any other bench out there by itself.

You’ll be able to do a few different exercises for several different muscle groups without having to purchase any additional equipment (with the exception of a barbell, weight plates and/or dumbbells).

No other bench on the list this year can boast these features which is incredible!

What we love:

  • Can be used for flat bench press or incline bench press
  • You can detach the preacher curl pad to work your biceps
  • Stands on the back make this suitable for reverse walk-in squats as well
  • Made from 14 gauge steel which is incredibly strong
  • Powder-coated finish for great durability
  • The seat can slide back and forth to give you the best possible position for your body
  • Preacher curls can also be done using weight plates and the handles

What we don’t like:

  • The price is pretty low for what you get so we’re not sure how good the quality will hold up
  • Barbell is not included for walk-in squats or bench press
  • Separate dumbbell sets or weight plates will be necessary to do the preacher curls
  • Cannot decline
  • Very poor 2-year limited warranty on the parts

Key Features:

  • You can use this machine for: bench press, preacher curls, reverse walk-in squats
  • Bar catchers are adjustable to suit different height requirements and arm lengths
  • High-density foam allows for durability and maximal comfort levels
  • Will accommodate standard 7-foot Olympic bars (nothing less since the space between the support beams is too wide)
  • 600 weight capacity

Overall Verdict:

Thanks to the very low cost of this all-in-one unit, the Marcy MD-857 Olympic Weight Bench will have you covered if you want to do squats, bench press, incline bench press and bicep curls.

For that reason alone we have no problem recommending this bench especially given its pretty low price-point for what you get.

Just keep in mind that the warranty is extremely poor with only a 2-year warranty on parts alone. At least you are well-informed to make the right decision.

#6: XMark XM 7630 Adjustable FID Weight Bench

XMark-Adjustable-FID-Weight-Bench

Editor’s Score:

Boasting an impressive 1500lbs weight capacity and the ability to decline as well, you’re probably not going to have to look much further than the XMark Adjustable FID Weight Bench

This is definitely the go-to bench for any serious home gym bodybuilder.

Offering up 7 positions from decline all the way to military press (dumbbell overhead press), Duracraft padding, foot hold down bars, and an ergonomically designed 3-position seat, this bench will be suitable for virtually anyone.

What we love:

  • Incredible 1500lbs weight capacity
  • Thick, cushioned Duraguard seat and backrest
  • Tear and sweat-resistant material
  • Skid-resistant feet
  • Powder-coated finish on the steel
  • Offered in 2 different colours – the one above or white
  • Incredible Lifetime Warrranty

What we don’t like:

  • Unlike the XM 7472, the XM 7630 cannot accept attachments such as the preacher curl or leg developer attachment

Key Features:

  • 1500lbs weight capacity for the most serious bodybuilders at home
  • Two colour options to suit your style
  • Powder coated steel finish for ultra durability over the long term
  • The Lifetime Warranty will make sure you don’t run into any issues at all down the road
  • Built-in skid resistant feet for smooth, flat surfaces
  • Large amount of highly positive reviews across many online retailer websites

Overall Verdict:

Although this bench doesn’t offer the same amount of features as the Marcy bench above, we still chose this to be featured as our Top Pick award winner for this year.

Boasting features that are unmatched by other benches, this bench is ideal for the more serious home gym bodybuilders with its insane 1500lbs weight capacity.

Compare that to the 300lbs weight capacity of certain benches above and it’s clear that this is a winner in our eyes especially considering its powder coated finish, lifetime warranty and skid resistant feet.

This wraps up about half of our article this year and we wanted to say thank you for sticking around to read everything we’ve presented you with.

Below you will find some more options and we’ve featured the XMark XM 7604 bench as well because we thought it would offer you more value.

Check out the next half of the article below and as always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns by using our contact form at the bottom of the website or in the comment section below!

  • Nothing we can personally think of.

  • 1500lbs weight capacity will allow you to employ progressive overload for a long time
  • Very think backrest and seat will prove themselves to be very durable over time
  • 10-Year Frame Warranty, 3-Year on Parts and 2-Year on wearable items

Overall Verdict:

If you want an amazing weight bench with a crazy high maximum weight capacity for an incredibly fair price, then this is the bench for you.

#8: XMark XM 7604 Flat Incline Decline Weight Bench

XMark-Flat-Incline-Decline-Weight-Bench

Editor’s Score:

Yet another fantastic option from XMark, the XM 7604 Flat Incline Decline Weight Bench is sure to deliver a respectable weight bench experience for the beginner or seasoned home gym veteran alike.

With a very respectable 11-gauge steel frame construction and an impressive 1500lbs weight capacity, this bench will hands-down outperform any other bench on this entire list in-class.

The seat pad can be adjusted to three different positions and the backrest itself is able to be adjusted to 7 different positions ranging from full decline to military press (overhead press).

You’ll also get sweat and tear resistant material, transportation wheels and a very sturdy U-shaped front frame design for stability and durability.

What we love:

  • Great 1500lbs weight capacity
  • Various seat and backrest position adjustments
  • Heavy duty steel construction
  • Sweat resistant and tear resistant material
  • Transportation wheels

What we don’t like:

  • The brighter steel frame design might get dirty after a while but this will be specific to the user and how well you take care of your equipment
  • The material for the backrest and seat are shiny and slightly ugly in our opinion

Key Features:

  • 1500lbs weight capacity will allow you to train hard for years to come
  • U-shaped base will make this bench as stable as possible when using the bench to do exercises for your back, abdomen and upper body
  • Heavy-duty steel construction and very thick and comfortable seat and backrest

#9: Ironmaster Super Bench Adjustable Weight Bench

Ironmaster-Super-Bench-Adjustable-Weight-Bench

Editor’s Score:

With some of the most positive reviews on any major retailer website, the Ironmaster Super Bench Adjustable Weight Bench will deliver one of the most respectable weight bench experiences around.

The super heavy-duty steel frame construction offers up a 1000lbs weight capacity and can adjust to 11 different angles ranging from full decline to upright for dumbbell overhead pressing!

Ideally suited as a standalone dumbbell bench, smith machines, cages or racks, there is no task that the Super Bench is not up for.

Rated at 600lbs for incline and decline positions, you will be able to progress for quite some time with this bench unless you can incline bench over 400lbs (and that’s if you’re 200lbs yourself!) which would be pretty impressive to be honest.

We don’t think that’s going to happen so you’re probably safe.

What we love:

  • Very high maximum weight capacity
  • Solid construction
  • Many different adjustment options
  • Versatility in terms of compatibility with a variety of Ironmaster attachments
  • Decent 10-Year warranty but still nothing like other options above (30-Year and Lifetime)
  • Excellent product for the money
  • Free shipping!

What we don’t like:

  • Kind of ugly with that stainless steel shiny frame

Key Features:

  • Super high construction quality that offers up unparalleled durability
  • The versatility of 11 angles makes this suitable for any application
  • 10-Year warranty on the frame will offer you peace of mind to keep working out worry-free
  • Very high 1000lbs weight capacity so you can keep progressing virtually limitless
  • 600lbs rating for incline and decline which is no big deal since no one in the world can incline bench press 400lbs
  • A laundry-list of attachments are also available in case you need additional equipment to get your perfect workout

Overall Verdict:

As one of the best-reviewed products on major online retailer websites and as one of the most durable and sturdy weight benches around, there really isn’t any need to look much further than this bench.

With the plethora of attachment options as well, you’ll have the ability to upgrade at any point you desire down the road making this suitable for even more serious home gym bodybuilders.

  1. This is amazingly comprehensive. I would have thought that I could just pick a bench based on price. I had no idea there were these different factors to think about. Although it’s probably going to be a while before my benching ability will start stretching that 1500 lb. limit.

    1. Hey Phil!

Yes absolutely, you can definitely just point and shoot in terms of a bench, but you’ll want to cover the bare essentials: Whether you need incline, decline or just a flat bench.

That 1500lbs limit, no one will ever reach that. It’s there to keep your bench functioning as it should for years to come.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Those look like some high quality workout benches.

I have been struggling getting my workouts in but the main question I have is if it is better to just get myself to the gym or get some equipment for the house. I have heard that it is more motivating to workout at the gym.

Do you have any opinion on that or have information that may help me with that question?

    1. For me personally, I just enjoy the whole process of getting up and going to the gym. For me, it’s not really a question of whether I will go or not, it’s ingrained into my lifestyle and is a major part of who I am.

I definitely know some people who would rather work out at home (sometimes) but you always get the advantage of seeing others who are stronger than you and drawing inspiration from that.

      Hope this helps!

  3. Michael, I consulted your article while I was shopping for some new home equipment. I like your suggestions and I will be purchasing the #7 bench to serve both mine and my husband’s fitness needs.
This is a great investment that will serve us years to come. Thanks for the recommendations! I enjoy your expertise.

    1. Hi Ashley,

So glad you found the information helpful. Let us know how the bench works out for you. Have a great weekend!
