Bodybuilding for Women Over 50: Top Reasons Age Doesn’t Matter!

PREFACE: My sincerest apologies to my readers. If you’ve read this article before you will notice that it’s been re-written. This is because my original vision of this article was not in-line with the message I wanted to convey. Please accept my apologies and enjoy the new article.


I think you’d agree with me if I said that a lot of women are confused about how to get into incredible shape, especially at 50 years of age or beyond.

Perhaps you’re confused as well.

You see all these women with incredible bodies, yet there you are doing endless cardio classes and spin classes only to look nothing like them.

As it turns out, you are absolutely more than capable of getting into the best shape of your life at virtually any age.

You see, most people tell you that you need to do more cardio, “eat healthy”, do weird diets, do spin classes and more…

…and I promise you that that is all rubbish and that there is a much better and easier way to get into incredible shape – and I think you’re going to love it!

In today’s post, I am going to share the “secret” (it’s not really a secret…) that so many women use to get into better shape than they ever have been, and I will show you just how easy it is to get started.

You can’t argue with Evelyn’s beauty.

At the time of the video shoot (December 19th, 2016) Evelyn was 61 years of age – so no one out there should have any more excuses as to why you can’t get into good shape at ANY age!

But that’s not all…

GETTING THE BODY YOU WANT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT, AND FOLLOWING THE RIGHT INFORMATION THAT LEADS YOU THERE


You see, when you’re out of shape, you’re out of shape and doing anything physically intensive will be difficult. 

I mean when I was 28 years old I began my workout journey and boy was I ever trashed – and the point I am trying to make is that getting started isn’t any easier for younger people.

As a matter of fact, if you follow the right guidance and use the right approach, getting into shape at 50+ could potentially be even easier than it is for someone that’s younger than you who perhaps follows bad advice.

The point is that you CAN do it. I believe in you and so should you!

Some key things to consider would be:

  • Just focus on starting. You get better over time and I don’t care what anyone says – no one is born in great shape.
  • Over the course of 6 months, 12 months and beyond, your body will begin transforming in front of your own eyes, I know it because I’ve seen it firsthand.
  • As you become stronger, faster, more agile and in better shape, you will begin feeling better about yourself and you’ll be protecting your body from injury.
  • Any of these things can happen at 20 years of age, 40, 60 or even 70 – you just have to DECIDE to start doing it.

All of the above can be done by following this website, various YouTube videos, fitness channels and other resources such as Reddit and things like that.

Just pick something and start – as you go you can improve and tweak things to your liking.

WHAT ARE YOU AIMING FOR?


First, you have to hone in on what exactly you wish to accomplish.

What’s your goal? If you’re considering bodybuilding and you’re a woman over 50 you have to ask yourself this one simple question.

The woman depicted above – Evelyn Flaharty – decided to get up on the stage and compete at 60 years of age and beyond!

That’s impressive. But it’s not necessary if that’s not what you want.

You could focus your energy on any one of the following points:

  • Losing weight (fat) if you want to
  • Toning up certain areas of your body
  • Building up more muscle to look better and prevent injury and osteoporosis
  • Looking great in any type of clothing apparel you like – dresses, gowns, leggings, yoga pants, whatever it is you want you have to figure that out.

Bodybuilding is not “a concrete way of planning your workouts” but rather (at least to me) it’s a way to continuously improve your life by creating a healthful body and mind that work together.

Once you have the vision of how you want your body to look, we can then proceed to begin structuring a plan to get you from point A (your current condition) to your end goal (although the end goal doesn’t really exist – it’s a journey).

YOU’RE INTERESTED IN LOSING WEIGHT ONLY


Plan a workout for you to get started by visiting resources and forums, Facebook groups, Bodybuilding.com, Reddit, YouTube, of course, depending on what you want (see the above section).

I DON’T WANT TO BORE YOU WITH WEIGHT LOSS – YOU CAME HERE FOR THE “GOOD STUFF!”


I’m absolutely ashamed it took me this long into the article to get to this point (a thousand freaking words…come on Mike, get with the program…)

Okay, so you don’t JUST want to lose weight – you want to actually shape and form your body into something that will allow you to publicly state “I bodybuild!”

I can offer that to you, no problem. 

There are essentially a handful of muscle groups that most women I’ve talked to want to “shape” and “form” and “tone” to resemble something desirable:

  • Glutes (the butt)
  • Arms (triceps)
  • Thighs (quads)
  • Abdominal region
  • Lower back
  • Shoulders
  • Hamstrings

These are all awesome muscle groups to target in your workouts if you want to look fabulous, but there’s a little bit more to it than what you probably think means “toning” and “size reduction”.

Two MAJOR facets are at play when you think of toning and shaping:

  1. In order to look “toned”, you MUST lose overall body fat
  2. In order to “shape” and “form” your body, you must make the target muscles stronger, and make them grow by… you guessed it… working them out.

WORKING OUT FOR WOMEN: BIG AND BULKY MUSCLES? EW.


Don’t worry – women’s testosterone is much lower than that of men which will basically make it impossible for you to gain massive muscles without the use of anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS).

What you’re basically going to be doing is working out the muscles so they get stronger and slightly bigger so that they can get that highly coveted “toned” look like the woman featured here.

By the way, meet Liu Yelin – a 50+ year old woman from China and arguably one of the hottest women alive today.

WHO IS LIU YELIN?


Liu’s a fitness model from China and below we have some details about this amazing woman.

If you’re easily made to feel awkward, just skip this next part I’m about to say.

Liu Yelin is so young and vibrant looking that, when her son was 16, people began mistaking her as his GIRLFRIEND. 

Not only that, Liu is seen attracting what seems to be an early to mid 20’s gentleman which is phenomenal!

This website is NOT about dating advice, but as we know, some people enjoy dating younger/older people (both men and women) and she’s got the looks to date anyone she wants! Good on her.

Look at her body – this is a look that entirely achievable and believe me when I tell you that she is strong as hell.


DISCLAIMER: Not everyone will be able to pull off this look at 50 and beyond.

Liu has some pretty excellent genetics I must say, but you can definitely achieve something close and if nothing else, get into absolutely incredible shape regardless of your “genetic predisposition”.


But does she have overly developed and “bulky muscles”? Absolutely not.

It would be absolutely impossible for any woman to have the nasty “bodybuilder look” without steroids, like I mentioned above so the goal is to get stronger and lose fat to look “toned” and “sexy” (whatever that means to you!

THERE ARE WOMEN OUT THERE DOING IT, SO WHY AREN’T YOU?


I am not sure why you came to this article, but if I were to wager a guess I would say it’s because you would like to change your body to make it look and feel better.

I just want to point out that YOU can absolutely change your body and you can even start right this second. There’s no better time than right now.

There’s also a lot of mumbo jumbo you’re hearing out there in terms of hormone decrease as we age, danger of exercising, injuries, building too much muscle, but it’s my duty to dispel all of this nonsense.

    1. Hi Fel,

      Bodybuilding is not really age-specific to be honest with you. The same principles apply whether you’re 15 or 65 – you must get stronger in the gym in order to progress. Luckily if you check out the Visual Impact for Women program you get everything you need in one convenient package.
